Five years ago, I was bored one day and decided to go buy some stuff I didn’t really need. I went to this record store in Arizona called Zia Records; They sell used records and DVDs way cheap. I went to the dvd section and saw the first season of a show called LOST. I had heard about it but only knew some people crash on an island. I saw some old friends and asked them if they’d seen it. They said “Yeah, but really…don’t buy it. You’re just gonna get pissed off because they don’t answer anything.” I thought, “Oh well. It’s $15.” I bought it and ended up ditching the next day of school so I could watch the entire first season straight through. This was between the end of the second season and the third season so I ditched another day of high school to finish the second season.
Eventually, I went so far down the rabbit hole of LOST. I started sitting around for hours; researching almost non-stop. Simply watching episodes is NO way to watch Lost. If you only watch the episodes and don’t continue your journey with these characters after the episode had ended…Well, you’re really cheating yourself out of what I considered a beautiful and constructive obsession. My best friends and I would meet twice a week; Once to watch the episode and another time later in the week where we’d discuss all of our theories. We eventually bought a gigantic white board after season 3 and put it on a wall in someone’s house where we’d just scribble down every question we could imagine. Now, the only question will be: What am I going to do tomorrow morning? :(
As John Locke continued his journey of finding his destiny and beginning his communion with the Island, so did I. I found myself having this amazing experience alongside my best friends. This show dramatically effected the way I view all sorts of questions in life; fate vs. free-will, science vs. faith, the balance of good vs. evil in the soul, human condition, and what I consider to be the most important virtue of Lost: Redemption.
The finale in no way could let me down because I will take 6 seasons of non-stop amazing television over one episode that wraps it up. I do have high expectations but I have all of my faith backing me up that they are gonna go out with a bang and go way above all of our expectations. Thank you to Damon Lindeloff, Cartlon Cuse, JJ Abrams, and the cast and crew of Lost. You all have changed many lives. Congrats, you guys are now legendary.
